The absence of any terrain troops concerns me. Nothing sucks more than a single cheap unit of MI getting into a piece of terrain next to your line of advance, either giving an immediate flank attack when you engage or keeping you from advancing to where you desire to go.

So, How would you build this list then?

I will be back in this Sunday for the conclusion of the BA Intro league and to share details of the upcoming Escalation league as well as post a sign up sheet at the store to hopefully get more attention.

Bolt Action / Bolt Action Winter Offensive; Escalation League
« on: January 23, 2018, 09:59:31 AM »
Starting Sunday, February 4th, we will be embarking on a multistore escalation league.  This will be held, concurrently, at both the Portal in Manchester, and the BattleStandard in East Windsor.  I will also be getting prize support for this from Warlord for multiple awards. I am finishing the details up now and will have a hand copy of the league rules and scoring for any interested persons to look over this Sunday, as well as a sign up sheet I will be posting in the store.  It is my goal to attract a larger group by running this in two locations.  A few highlights of the event;

This will run for 9 weeks stating in February and ending in April (a tournament will follow, date TBD)
three point levels; 500, 750, 1000.  There will be list requirements for each level.  Each point level will last three weeks.  Games will be recorded along for points towards prizes at the end.  Prizes will also be awarded for modeling skill as well as just winning games.

Having at least one type of transport will be good in games were nothing starts on the table and you have to race to capture objectives.  Halftracks are better than trucks as they aren't likely to be captured quickly or run off.

Matt, this was my first build.  Was this any better or worse?

This is much better.  Now, If I understand the tactics, the I corps holds the center with the Pike as a solid line and the Xystophoroi  to protect their flanks and counter attack as needed.  the II Corps can hold one flank with the 4 Hoplite units also flanked by the Medium Cavalry which should prevent their flanks from being turned and a skirmisher to put out where needed.  III Corps basically roadblocks Knights, Cataphracts and Cavalry using the Elephant to intimidate the horses.  With 3 light and 2 mediums, it's basically an elephant delivery method to keep the oppositions Cavalry Honest.  Did I get that right?

I switched around the Generals so that each Infantry Corps has a Competent commander and an Ordinary for the Cavalry Wing.  I thought about the Elephants but wasn't sure how to work the list to fit them in.  Do you remember the list you put together?

I do still keep tabs on FoW, but I am also organizing and running Bolt Action events right now.  That being said, I won't be in tomorrow as I am recovering from the flu and didn't think spreading germs to all of you would be to sporting of me.  I believe Scott McLaughlin and Jen Roy are still fully into FoW and one of them may be interested in a pickup game.

So, Having never looked at the Pyrrhic list before, your recommendations had me give it a good read.  Though, to be fair, having the flu these last few days gave me ample opportunity to read when I wasn't sleeping.  So this is the preliminary list I put together.

Pyrrhic 280-275 BC

I Corps
Ordinary General
Epirotes and Macedonians; Pikemen x3
Tarentine Phalangites; Pikemen, mediocre x3
Greek Hoplites; Heavy Spearmen, mediocre x2
Rhodian Slingers; Light Infantry Sling x2

II Corps
Ordinary General
Epirotes and Macedonians; Pikemen x3
Tarentine Phalangites; Pikemen, mediocre x3
Greek Hoplites; Heavy Spearmen, mediocre x2
Light Troops; Light Infantry Bow x2

III Corps
Brilliant General, Included
Xystophoroi; Heavy Cavalry Impact Elite x2
Greek Horsemen; Heavy Cavalry x2

24 units and 199 points.  I could downgrade the III Corps General to Ordinary and get a Fortified Camp (I noticed quite a few of those in my games at the tournament)

The squads are still small, and fragile, you really should think of dropping vehicles until around 800-1000 points.  You'd still be better off filling out the squads and maybe supporting with an MMG or a Mortar team.  If the tank gets pancaked you're still going to be severely disadvantaged.  As it is, you will struggle right now vs Soviets, and Japanese (order dice and too many squads for you to frag quickly enough), and Anyone with a couple of Shaped charges will outrange the flammpanzer by 12" at least.  One good shot and a fairly large part of your force is gone.

So I am currently considering three other armies and would like feedback on which one you guys might fit my play style, defensive, better.

1. Classical Greek
2. Feudal Spanish
3. Scythians

Right now I'm aiming for learning the game, competitive can come during the escalation league starting in February.  But a few suggestions.  I'd drop the medic.  It only gives you a 1 in 6 chance of negating a wound, and for the the points it's not really worth it.  You also might need so many Panzerfausts right off the bat.  You can always add them later as you work your way towards 1000 points.  Instead add a MMG team to cover a sector and you want your Veteran squad to be able to stick and move.

2nd Lt (Equipped as Modeled)
1 Soldier (Equipped as Modeled)

Heer Grenadier Squad    Regular
NCO with smg
1 Infantry with lmg (requires loader)
5 Infantry with Rifle
2 Infantry with Assault Rifle

Heer Veteran Grenadier Squad     Veteran
NCO with Assault Rifle
1 Infantry with lmg (requires loader)
5 Infantry with Rifles
2 Infantry with Assault Rifles
1 Panzerfaust

Medium Machine Gun Team     Regular
1 Medium Machine Gun Team
Team (3 men), Fixed

Medium Mortar Team    Regular
1 Medium Mortar Team
Team (3 men), Fixed, Indirect Fire, HE (2")
1 Spotter

Sniper Team     Regular
1 Sniper Team
Team (2 man), Sniper

Still comes to exactly 500 points and gives you 6 order dice.
