List building
« on: February 08, 2017, 11:08:35 AM »
So, after aquiring the Axis book for the minor axis allies, I am going to go with the Finns.  This is my list as it stands at the moment.

Regular 2nd Lt with smg
+1 soldier armed with Rifle

Veteran Jaakari Light Infantry Squad
NCO with Rifle
LMG
6 Riflemen, 2 armed with Panzerfausts
Tough Fighters ( When a tough fighter scores a casualty in close quarters against infantry or artillery, it can immediately make a second damage roll.)

Veteran Sissi Recon Squad
NCO with Rifle

6 Riflemen

Veteran Kaukopartio Long Distance Recon Squad

5 Infantry with SMG's
Entire Squad equiped with AT Grenades
Entire Squad are Fanatics
Entire Squad are Medics
Deep Strike

Regular Sniper Team

Look! We're not worried about the German army, we've got enough troubles of our own. To the right General Patton, to the left the British Army, to the rear our own goddamn artillery, and besides all that it's raining.

I would like to critique your list, but I don't even know the rules yet. So, I doubt my commentary would be useful.  :)

Actually, I just wanted to show how an example list may look.  This list I ran by some BA players on Facebook and they told me it should work very well.

Here's a question for you:

  • The generic "Reinforced Platoon" list at the beginning of the Armies of Great Britain book has two mandatory "infantry sections." Can those be Commandos?

On one hand, the Commandos are listed in the infantry section of the book and their cost says "Veteran Infantry 70pts." That seems to imply I can use them. On the other hand, there are infantry sections specifically called "Infantry Sections" (inexperienced, regular, and veteran), plus there is a Raiding themed list that just has Commandos in it, both of which seem to imply that I cannot use them in the generic list.

Greg does have an easyarmy builder for Bolt Action.  But otherwise Phil is correct.  Your book should have theatre specific lists to help the theme.

Thanks! Do you think it's more important to have recon or transport? I was hoping to have both, but Commandos are pretty expansive and it looks like I'll have to choose one or the other.

Here is a possible Commando list for you to think about.  I think it covers most of what you may be looking for.

Veteran 2nd LT armed with either, Pistol, smg, or rifle
+1 extra rifleman (equipped as you choose)

Veteran Commando Section
NCO with smg
6 Commandos with Rifles
1 Commando with Vickers K LMG (requires a loader)
Rules: Behind Enemy Lines, Tough Fighters

Veteran Commando Section
NCO with smg
6 Commandos with Rifles
1 Commando with Vickers K LMG (requires a loader)
Rules: Behind Enemy Lines, Tough Fighters

Veteran Medic with pistol

Free Regular Forward Observer for Artillery

Veteran Commando Section
NCO with smg
6 Commandos with Rifles
1 Commando with Vickers K LMG (requires a loader)
Rules: Behind Enemy Lines, Tough Fighters

Regular Medium Mortar Team (3 man team)
+Spotter

Veteran Sniper team (two men)

National Characteristic: Rapid Fire (This is free so change as you may want to)

Regular LVT 4 Water Buffalo

Regular Cruiser tank Mark VIII Cromwell

997 points, 10 order dice.

Since the Commandos are plastic and come in 25 to a box, you could do all three Commando sections from one box except the Vickers K LMG's which are separate models for some reason, buy a couple of sprues to do the officer, medic and sniper team (box comes with scoped rifles, pistols and other goodies)  that covers quite a bit.  All you would have to get then is the Commando Vickers K LMG teams (3 of them, one for each section), LVT, Cromwell, the Forward Observer, and the Commando Mortar team.

It's just a possibility, but Hopefully I got ya thinking ;)

Thanks, Chris. Here's what I came up with for Commandos (everything is veteran, except where noted):

HQ: 2nd Lt, 2x infantry
Commando Section: NCO (smg), 6x infantry (rifles), Vickers K LMG, entire squad has AT grenades
Commando Section: NCO (smg), 6x infantry (rifles), Vickers K LMG, entire squad has AT grenades
Commando Section: NCO (smg), 6x infantry (rifles), LMG, entire squad has AT grenades
Light Mortar team
PIAT team
Forward Observer (Regular): Artillery Observer, 1x infantry
LVT 4 Buffalo (Regular), with extra hull MMG
Cromwell (Regular)

National characteristic: Tough as Boots

That will give me 9 order dice, some very tough troops in assault (the Commandos all have Tank Hunters, Tough Fighters, and Tough as Boots) and, I think, a decent mix of support.

What do you think?

Like you, I've only started list building. I have done reading on BA forums, combined with my very thorough training with Jedi Master Phil, has provided some insight.  I think your list looks good.  One thing about this game is balancing units with having enough order dice.  Otherwise if say, you have only 6-7 order dice and your opponent has say 10-11.  You might not do well.  But at 1000 points I'm thinking 9-10 is about right.

Very good. Now I just need to buy the Commandos box and start painting.

I just finished reading the rules, and it seems to me that an open-topped transport is extremely fragile (since it can be pinned by small arms fire). I also found the Royal Marine Commandos list. So, here's what I'm thinking at the moment:

Royal Marine Commando Troop
RM 2nd Lt, 2x infantry
RM Commando Section: NCO (smg), 6x infantry (rifles), Vickers K LMG, entire squad has AT grenades
RM Commando Section: NCO (smg), 6x infantry (rifles), Vickers K LMG, entire squad has AT grenades
RM Commando Section: NCO (smg), 6x infantry (rifles), Vickers K LMG, entire squad has AT grenades
RM Light Mortar team
RM PIAT team
Forward Observer (Regular): Artillery Observer, 1x infantry
Daimler Armored Car (Regular)
Cromwell (Regular)

National characteristic: Tough as Boots
Order Dice: 9

My Initial Thought was to do some veteran Germans It was real hard to fit in tanks and I don't like Bolt action's armor rules anyhow so I suppose that works:

2ndLT with 1 guy
Medic with 1 guy
8 man squad with 1x LMG, 1x Assault Rifle, 1x SMG, 5x Rifles + 2x PzFaust
8 man squad with 1x LMG, 1x Assault Rifle, 1x SMG, 5x Rifles + 2x PzFaust
8 man squad with 1x LMG, 1x Assault Rifle, 1x SMG, 5x Rifles + 2x PzFaust
8 man squad with 4x Assault Rifle, 3x SMG, 1x Rifles + 2x PzFaust
MMG
Puma(Regular)
251/1(Regular)
9 Order dice

Looks good Mike!

Phil, like I told Mike many times, no game is perfect.  I daresay even writing your own will take several rewrites and most likely someone won't like a particular game mechanic you come up with.   ;)

Here's another possible list for your consideration Phil,

Veteran 2nd Lt +1 rifleman
Veteran Medic + 1 assistant
Heer Veteran Grenadier squad with 1x LMG, 1x Assault Rifle, 1x SMG, 5x Rifles + 2x PzFaust
Heer Veteran Grenadier squad with 1x LMG, 1x Assault Rifle, 1x SMG, 5x Rifles + 2x PzFaust
Heer Veteran Grenadier squad with 1x LMG, 1x Assault Rifle, 1x SMG, 5x Rifles + 2x PzFaust
Regular Begleit StuG Escort Infantry Squad  4x SMG, 1x LMG, 3x Rifles
Veteran Medium Machine Gun Team
Veteran Kubelwagen (no transport) with Pintle MMG, Flak, 360 degree arc
Regular StuG III G,H

999 points, 9 order dice.
Look! We're not worried about the German army, we've got enough troubles of our own. To the right General Patton, to the left the British Army, to the rear our own goddamn artillery, and besides all that it's raining.
