Tournament missions going forward
« on: April 18, 2017, 10:17:57 AM »
So, there is a lot of discussion going on online about how to do mission selection for future tournaments.  A lot of TO's are trying to figure this out. Now, one idea was to let players use the battle plan, with the stipulation that once a specific mission is played, it gets checked off in their chart and they cannot replay it.  This would, hopefully, avoid people simply playing the same mission over and over.  Most other means seem to eventually end up being a dice off to see who is attacker and defender.

BTW, annihilation, has been completely rejected as a tournament scenario. Except by BF itself.

Chris, What happens if the chart will dictate that they will play a mission they already have played?

Still working out the quirks.

I've been thinking about this issue myself, and I don't think the chart is a viable option as it is currently configured. Tank companies will simply do the hasty attack option every game, so they don't have to defend in a Deep Reserves mission. This means that everyone will play a ton of fair fight missions, which will lead to a boatload of no-win games.

I think fairest way is to have the TO announce all the missions ahead of time (as in v2), use the "most infantry formations defends" option, and include a Rearguard in the mix. Announcing the missions ahead of time gives the tankers a chance to add some infantry if there are Deep Reserve missions. Rearguard is the best designed mission, has a definite turn limit, infantry formations can win by actually defending, and it should generate a winner every time (one way or the other).

In the downloadable V4 mission generator, the mission chart is much more comprehensive, and dictates who attacks and who defends.  Once allied and Axis commanders choose to attack or defend, they go to the appropriate block and then select the mission.  For example, The Allied player chooses hasty attack, the Axis player chooses to defend, then there are three missions; Breakthrough, Counterattack, Hasty Attack.  Now they either choose, or roll for it.  But whichever one is picked, gets checked off on the attackers missions and the attacking player is not allowed to choose that mission again for the rest of the tournament, regardless of which other box that mission is in.  So if they pick the hasty attack mission right off, then they'll not be allowed to choose it again for the rest of the tournament.

Now, if you look at the ratio of missions to battle plans, this can quickly start making the attackers choices a little more difficult.  Also, by using the simple expedient of making the players choose once only from Prepared Attack, Hasty Attack, and Defend battle plans, then this should make things a bit more workable.

No Retreat 2 times
Bridgehead 2 times
Rearguard 2 times
Free For All 3 times
Encounter 3 times
Dust Up 3 times
Breakthrough 4 times
Counterattack 4 times
Hasty Attack 4 times

So despite some missions appearing more than others, nice job BF on pushing tanks again, eliminating each mission as it's selected should give a better spread on the missions.

Does the defender mark off that mission, too? Or only the attacker?

If the former, what happens when between the two players all three of a set have been played by one or both?

If the later, a player who defends in multiple rounds could end up playing the same mission multiple times then?

The sad thing is BF caused this themselves by that idiotic deep reserves rule. Even in V1 deep reserves wasn't so punishing(nevermind that it doesn't work as a rule in EW :o)

Both will

If the former, what happens when between the two players all three of a set have been played by one or both?

If, both players have all three missions in the box checked off, then the TO will select a mission for them, or they may roll randomly from the three and take their chances refighting one of the scenarios they have previously played.

If the later, a player who defends in multiple rounds could end up playing the same mission multiple times then?

Same as applies above.  Unless all three are checked off then do the same.
